Common stove problems
These are the stove and cooktop calls we get most often. Open a problem to see the likely causes and a quick safe check you can do before we arrive.
Book a Stove Repair or call (111) 111-1111Safety first: if you smell gas, do not light any burner or switch anything on or off. Leave the home and call 911 from outside.
A healthy gas flame is mostly blue and even all the way around. Yellow, orange or lazy flames mean the gas is not burning cleanly.
Food spills and cleaner residue block some of the small holes, so the flame comes out patchy.
A burner cap that sits off center after cleaning gives a lopsided flame.
Too little air in the mix turns the flame yellow and leaves soot on pans.
Quick check: with the burners off and cool, lift the caps, make sure they are dry and seated flat, and wipe away any crumbs around the burner base.
If an induction zone blinks, beeps or shows a pan symbol when a pot is on it, the cooktop is not sensing a pan it can heat.
Aluminum, copper and glass pans will not work unless the base is magnetic.
A failed coil or sensor under the glass cannot detect even the right pan.
The board that drives the zone stops responding.
Quick check: hold a fridge magnet to the bottom of the pan. If it does not stick firmly, try a different pan on the same zone.
On electric coil and many glass tops, a burner that glows red no matter where you set the knob has lost its control.
The switch behind the knob sticks closed and sends full power all the time.
Damaged contacts where the coil plugs in can cause erratic heat.
Heat-worn wiring between the switch and the element changes how the burner behaves.
Quick check: turn the burner off at the knob, and if it keeps heating, switch the stove off at the breaker until it is repaired.
A stove that trips the breaker as soon as a burner or the oven turns on has a short somewhere in the high-voltage circuit.
A cracked or blistered element shorts to its own metal sheath.
Loose or burnt connections where the power cord meets the stove overheat and short.
Water from a boil-over gets inside an element and trips the breaker until it dries out.
Quick check: do not keep resetting the breaker. Note which burner or setting trips it and leave the stove off until it is checked.
